Training Done Right

Cue the music. Dun dun dun dun...do you feel like you're being watched? Is this the moment of terror from Jaws just before the shark strikes? Not likely. It's your favorite angel watching every move you make to learn your routines and get YOU to do what he wants.

As our friend, Jeff Drier with Bark Busters, reminds us, "We are creatures of habit so we have routines that we follow. Dogs will respond to the sequence of events and they will also use the sequence of events to try and shape our behavior." Jeff has been kind enough to allow us to share his most recent newsletter What's Rover Learning Today? in this edition.

"Bark Busters is the world's largest, most trusted Home Dog Training company. Their mission is to promote clear and open communication between owners and their dogs using simple and effective training methods that appeal to the canine psyche." For more information, contact Jeff at 877-500-BARK (2275) or email tampa@barkbusters.com.

Look Who's Found a Home
We received so many happy stories over the last few months we just had to share them all.  Thank you for letting us know how much all of the little angels are loved.

Pippi has a new family.  His mom writes, "Two evenings ago I was picking up around the house and I came around the corner and noticed all the puppies piled up on my husband Marty. I couldn't resist getting a quick picture and, if you notice, he has the appropriate shirt on that reflects how we feel about our babies. I don't know how our family felt complete without her before. I wish we knew her history. It's hard to believe someone would lose such a sweet little girl and not try to find her. Their loss is definitely our blessing."

Holly has a great home and a new brother named Poko.  According to her mom, "Do you think she’s happy and content enough? Notice in the picture they are catching rays of sun. There’s not a day that goes by that I look at her and realize how much I love her. I always tell Robert how lucky I feel to have her."

Willow
has found a happy home.  Her mom let us know she's very happy. They're letting her sleep in the bedroom at night which we know she loves. And she even has her own cat!

Teddy
is doing VERY WELL according to his mom, pictured here with his sister Kala.  "Teddy is a dear. We recently drove to our son's in Virginia for Thanksgiving with both dogs and they were perfect travelers and entertained a lot of people! He still has some health problems that are long term and may not be able to do therapy because he needs to be healthy to do so but he will always be a little love here at home. His former owner did the right thing and I am reaping the benefits. He is well behaved and he and Kala get along so well. He knows many commands and just occasionally do I have to work hard to get his attention! Many thanks to you and everyone connected with the group!"

We recently had some of the best news we could have received. Simon finally has a family. According to his mom, " Yes, I am officially adopting the little Simonator! He’s really been coming around lately. He had a sleep-over at my parents’ house last Friday and behaved very well. He spent the day there yesterday too and was pretty good. We still have a few issues to work out but he’s improving all the time and everyone has become attached to him, including my dad! He seems to enjoy hanging out with the family. I think it’s good that he’s in a household with one person but he gets to have a part-time family too. My sister lives next door to my parents and loves to walk, run and play with him. Thanks so much to you, Kelly and everyone else for all the encouragement. You were right about him… he’s a special little guy and just needs time, work and love. I think you all are the Angels for your dedication to these helpless little dogs."

Layla's mom tells us, "I am pleased to report that Layla is more than comfortable here! She has not barked, cried, anything! The kids LOVE her and she loves them too! I just want to thank you and let you know she is in good hands! She loves her snowflake shirt I got her." and then one week later, "Layla is adjusting well. One week has gone by and I feel like she has been here forever, she is so attached already! Eating well, resting well and still no barking!!"

Jimmy is happy in his new home. His mom and dad wrote, "We love him so much and he seems very happy with us. We adore him so much and always wonder about what his life was like before us. Thank you for taking care of him the way you did. We don't know what we would do without him in our lives! We admire you so much for taking care of animals the way you do!"

Adrian
finally found his right place, adopted by our little Bertie's mom and dad and pictured here with Lilly, a 1 year old dachshund that was going to be euthanized.  "Don thinks he is just the cutest guy. Sits with him on his lap in the evening and Adrian just lays there and sleeps soundly. Adrian really seems to love Don already. When he comes home from work Ruby Rose, Bella and Adrian are right there at the door. They are all happy to see him, and begging attention. Adrian is very affectionate. He also seems to like being around the other dogs and us. He will either follow them or us around, unless he gets tired. Then he finds a comfy spot and goes to sleep. Don said last night he really needed us, and I agree he seems to feel loved already. I will just have to get used to being told what to do and when to do it! He is a little love, bossy, but a love. Just one big happy family here. I do have to say four dogs are a lot! But, I look at them and all are rescues and all would not be alive (except Adrian) if we hadn't opened our doors and hearts. I wish more people would adopt a dog in need instead of going to a store and buying a dog that was probably born in a puppy mill." and then a few weeks later "Adrian is doing great. He is truly happy here. Don just said last night that he acts happy and secure with us. He doesn't sleep so much any more. He goes to bed when we do and gets up when we do. He doesn't sleep in a crate now, but in a nice fluffy bed with soft blankets next to our bed. He is the king, I have to make him a special diet because he just plain refuses to eat dog food. So, it is either chicken, green beans, cottage cheese, and wheat toast, or eggs, green beans, cottage cheese and rice. He has gained a whole pound! You should see him, he even plays ball and runs in the yard. I cannot tell you how much he has won our hearts. He is just a love, cuddly, and demanding, funny, and cute as a button."

Salsa is doing fantastic and even got the chance to visit Santa Claus, pictured here along with mom and dad.

Gulliver is such a happy pup. He writes, "My name is Gulliver Kotrady. I was adopted in June 2005. I have become a very very spoiled pup. My mommy and daddy said that a man named Santa would be bringing me presents in my stocking. I hope they are snacks - I LOVE snacks! My vet said I was being so well fed that I had to go on a diet. My mommy takes me for extra walks since the weather has cooled some. I have a cute chocolate brown chihuahua girlfriend that lives a few houses from me and lots of friends in the neighborhood. Thank you so much for being the angel in my life to save me and care for me until my mommy and daddy could find me."

Maximo is happy with his new family. "He has gotten bigger- all 8 lbs of him. Thanks again for giving us this treasure."

This little guy hit the jackpot with his new family.
Here's Kirby all dressed up for Santa's visit.

Robbie's family writes, "Robbie is wonderful!!! He and Brandy had a good chase/play session earlier today. The fireworks are causing some barks, but no panic. I have been trying to photograph him all afternoon, but he is very camera shy, so I have to catch him when he is sleeping. I will have some photos to you soon. Robbie has definitely established his domain. He guards the food dish when he is interested in eating, but that is exactly the same behaviour I had from my previous angel, so Brandy is not intimidated. He has his own two beds in the house, but he occasionally likes to use Brandy's bed when he is not snuggled up with me on the couch - territory, again, but she is not challenging him. I am completely amazed at how well he has adjusted and he is such a snuggle bug. He loves to chase his toy, as I'm sure you know. He met my vet today and loved her as well as everyone else in the office. He is so friendly everyone just loves him. Robbie has taken over one of the snuggle beds, but he and Brandy trade places throughout the day (when he isn't sleeping on the couch). I am just amazed at how smart he is. He already understands 'go outside' and 'go in the house'. He runs for the door. Thanks for considering us as adoptive parents for a very special someone. And thanks for the wonderful work you do to rescue the victims of ignorance. "

Emma is doing well and is very happy with her new brother, Brutus. Here she is with her dad who loves her like crazy.

Lola's family writes, "Thank you so much for allowing us to adopt Iris....AKA....Lola Brinny......she has been such a joy....I call Lola Brinny my little Mousekateer....THANK YOU soooooo much. "

Cinnamon was adopted by a very sweet family a few years ago. Her mom sent us this picture and said "Here's my baby."

Porter has finally found the loving family he so deserves. His new mom ABSOLUTELY LOVES HIM. She says he's the best dog ever. She said she wished she'd have pulled out a camcorder when they brought him in. They have tile, wood and carpeted floors. She said the minute he stepped on to the carpet it looked like he was walking with snow boots on. He could not figure out what carpet was. He loves sleeping on his bed, though the daughter tried to get him to sleep with her. He was on the bed two minutes and got down to lay on his own bed. He goes for car rides to take their daughter to school and pick her up. He sleeps in the girl's room at night, but if he has to go to the bathroom, he goes and sits by mom's bed and nudges her hand to wake her up. He's taking a little longer to get used to dad, but he has definitely found "HIS PEOPLE". Everyone who meets him loves him and wants to know where they got him. Her husband is calling him Chuckie, we guess for the Bucs. She said she came home one afternoon and there was her husband and all his friends watching football with Porter sitting in the middle of them with a Bucs jersey on!! She said he hams it up for all her friends, sits in the middle of everybody and is just wonderful. She says he's put on some weight and loves his treats. They couldn't be happier with him.

Chester and Franklin are doing well with their family.  " We adopted these guys back in October. They took their first vacation with us. We left Christmas Day night. We have a home in the mountains. I promised I would send pictures. The guys are doing wonderful! They love their back yard. Chester has lost weight and gained muscle, Frankie is nothing but muscle. Frankie also loves his toys and does not like to share. Thanks." We are so glad that he found you and you love him so much.

Here’s another fantastic story.  "Oliver, is our pride and joy. He was positively spoiled on Christmas Day. Santa brought him a new bed (just for the day because he sleeps with us at night), half a dozen new toys, a new toothbrush and chicken-flavored toothpaste, a St. Francis of Assisi medal for his collar to keep him safe, doggie breath mints, a basket of special pooch pampering grooming products and a leather jacket. We're so thankful to you all for bringing him into our lives." Ollie's mom, D'Ann is a contributor for the Tampa Tribune and was kind enough to write about her adoption and Lost Angels. We greatly appreciate the "plug".

Peanut's
mom writes, "We have made such a wonderful choice in the new addtion to our family. Here are some pictures of out newest King. Such a personality celebrity!"

Presley
was recently adopted and we are happy to hear she’s doing so well.  Her mom tells us, “We are very much enjoying having Presley in our lives. She is a doll and the perfect addition to our family. She's adjusting quite nicely and getting used to being spoiled. We took her for her first vet visit last night to Fish Hawk Animal Clinic. She got a glowing report. Thanks so much for everything!"

Leo and Ruby
are happy in their new home.  Her mom tells us, "They are well settled and little darlings, Ruby is not the little quiet thing that you thought, she has a lovely personality and runs our house and Leo with a rod of iron. She has lost lots of weight and can now walk as far as Leo on those little legs of hers."
Leo followed up with his own note, "Hope you can see me better on this pic - I told my Mom it was a better pose. As for Ruby I only let her think she rules everything for a quiet life dreaming of bones and biscuits xx. PS I'm so glad you found me and Ruby. We really are very happy here with our human family daft that they are over us but who would not want all this love and kissy business."

Tank is adjusting well to his new home. We are so happy to share his mom and dad fostered him and fell in love so hard they just had to adopt him.  "He’s doing really well and seems to be coming out of his shell a little bit. He has the sweetest personality and we just adore him."

Baxter's mom wrote to let us know "tomorrow will be a month since I adopted Baxter. He is doing so well, and just a happy boy. He had his vet visit last week. I found out that he is 4 1/2. He has a cataract that we are keeping an eye on. He is starting to gain weight. He is getting better with other dogs as well. I will continue to keep you posted. I just love him and the rest of my family is crazy about him. He is definitely a spoiled little boy."

We’ve heard from Polly and Porter's new family that they well loved. "We just wanted to send you a few pics of our girls and guys. We couldn't be happier to add Polly and Porter to our family. Thanks again for all you do."

Beau's mom tells us, "I just wanted to send some updated photos and tell you that little Beau -- of course we couldn't call him three-syllable "Baudrillard" forever, so the nickname is Beau -- is such a joy! He's just smart and sweet and cracking us up all the time. He's constantly surprising us -- growing quickly, learning quickly. We're always wondering what breeds must be in his background, because he's not a barker (yet?), and he's got a slightly larger, stockier body than most min pins. At 14 weeks he's about 10 1/2 pounds. Of course we're biased and just think he's cuter than any min pin we've seen. He's such a good jumper, I wonder if he wouldn't eventually enjoy agility courses. He's already got the cutest responses to "sit" and "lay down" and "come" -- always full energy. Come? Okay, I'll race straight at you! Sit? How quickly can I hit the floor? Lay down? I'll throw my front legs straight out! And then of course he'll curl up in your lap and make the sweetest puppy faces in the world. His ears are a big help with this, since they do everything from flop around his face to leap straight up from his head. Thanks again for pairing us with this sweet puppy!"

Perry's new family writes, "Perry is doing fantastic. He has really made himself part of the family. He has got to be one of the silliest dogs I've ever met. He makes us laughand my son just absolutely loves him."

Brady's new family is a repeat adoption, taking Jack into their home not too long ago. "Finally did the pictures of our new Baby Brady! He is such a love and the sweetest temperment we've seen. Thank you so much Kelly for choosing us to be his forever home. He has added to the love in our home!"

We’ve heard from Frankie's mom. "Just wanted to say hello and give you a few recent pictures of our pride and joy, Frankie. I cannot tell you how happy we are to have him in our family. He has absolutely shocked us with his good manners and with how incredibly well trained he is. It was as if he had lived with us forever - we haven't had to train him one bit!! He has been to the vet and is up to date with everything and is extremely happy and healthy. He is so playful and loving - he loves endless affection and is very well behaved around other dogs. Whoever let him go was CRAZY! Thank you for saving him!!"

"Fritter is fitting in really well. We just can't believe how well he has assimilated into our family. He loves the girls and give them lots of kisses. They have played a lot with him and he never gets frustrated. Even when the neighbor girls were gushing over him, he just sat there and lapped it up. I thought I would share these pics with you too! We feel really blessed to have Fritter in our family. Thanks for letting us adopt him." His family put together a slide show for friends and family, and we are so happy they shared it with us.

"Here is an update for the people who love me.... New Name: Sadie. Favorite things to do: roll in the grass, run, rip, chew and play with the cat. Person who likes me the least: the cat. favorite snacks: ice cubes and peanut butter. Command I know best so far: "sit" when a car is coming. Favorite toys: stuffed animal dog, old belt, rope and cardboard boxes." Her mom and dad add, "Thanks for letting us become her new home!"

"Pippi is still doing great. She was seen by the vet last week. Vet said she's a little underweight and good thing she's eating like crazy. She loves her new home and her new sibilngs. My kids fell in love with her! Vet said she isn't Shetland Sheepdog/EnglishSetter...she is really Shetland Sheepdog/Border Collieor Cattledog mix. She's being a GOOD girl! Still on leash and we will be putting a fence up so she can go out and run!"

Kayley's mom wrote to tell us, "We're the folks who picked up the little shih-tzu - yorkie last Oct ---- well, she's 99% yorkie, but we love her!! And, she's become quite a highlight in the family. Taz now has a playmate, which he loves. They are still trying to figure out the 'alpha dog' role between them, but it's been fun watching them - they appear to be fairly equally suited temperament-wise. I've been meaning to send a couple of pics to show you how well she looks now - Kayley (formerly Pepper) was 8 lbs when we got her - she's now filled in nicely, and is quite the cute, trim, and well-adjusted little girl....... she's filled out nicely and now looks like a healthy little girl!!"

Jessica sent us a letter that just grabbed our hearts. "I am Jessica Jones and I am 15. In 2005 I adopted an eight month white and chocolate pointer named Paige. She is beautiful and I love her. She will be three in May. She's a great dog playful, a teddy bear, although she's crazy she's still my best friend and loves when I read to her. Our cat passed away in September 2007 and in October 2007 my dad came home with a small beagle mix named Judy whom we also got from Lost Angels the same place we got Paige. They are both adorable and love their new homes. Best of all they're best friends and although Judy is about half the size she is definitely boss in that friendship. Although she follows Paige everywhere she always steals her toys and bones. Judy and Paige live for each other and would die for each other and couldn't imagine one without the other now. Judy's cheaky and is constantly getting in trouble she loves to chew on things and Paige is constantly telling on her. She has a distinct sound that means Judy is doing something naughty. They are like little children Judy enjoys finding ways to get somewhere she can't belong and Paige has converted her. They also love to tag team when it comes time for bath they run in different directions, neither like baths too much they just run away dripping wet. Judy was shy when we got her and just hid under the table and now is one brave little girl. I guess I just wanted to share our success story. Thank you Lost Angels without you I wouldn't have my best friends and they wouldn't have each other. I respect what you guys do and in general how you save dogs. I look on your website everyday to see if there are new dogs. It amazes me how many you have and if I could adopt all of them I would. I used to have a phobia of dogs but Paige was the thing that got me over it and through it. I am now a huge dog lover and couldnt live without them. You guys do an amazing thing and truly are a good cause. Thank you, Lots of love and doggy kisses from Jessica, Paige and Judy." Thank you Jessica for sharing your thoughts and love for your little angels. It means the world to all of us and it's very obvious to us how much your Paige and Judy are loved.

"We would like to give you quick update on Toby. He is adjusting fine, doing soo good with our kids and other dog. He got a clean bill of health from our vet who was actually surprised how well behaved Toby is. Thank you again for your help in adopting Toby."

"Izzie had a good ride home we stopped at the rest area just after Lakeland and we let her stretch her legs and such. She laid down the whole way. Izzie has explored her new home and really seems to like it. I'll attach the pictures from yesterday. She paid no attention to the cat but the cat is hiding behind the dryer or under the bed or outside the fence. He'll figure out that she is a very sweet girl soon enough."

We’ve heard from Ernie's mom, "I just wanted to let you know that Dugan (we changed his name to Ernie) is doing great and we just love him to pieces. He is getting along great with my other dog Paco, they look like cousins! Tomorrow is his first vet visit. He is doing really well with housetraining. Thanks again, we love him!"

This is a happy ending we are excited to share. Elliot has a new mom! She tells us, "I wanted to share with you how great we are doing together. Friday night I took Elliot to get some needed things at Petco. He loves his booda (he likes to chew where the squeaky is) and chases the squeaky tennis ball just fine. And we got him a gentle lead so we could teach him to be a nice boy on a leash. And he is such a gentleman in the car. I really like the top down too. He just sniffs the air and squints when it’s sunny out. We then went to go meet Marley, my ex-husband’s dog. Elliot learned the doggie door quite quickly. I gave him 2 of my feather pillows to make him a bed beside me. He slept quite nicely there. He very politely puts his paws up where I can see him to let me know he is awake. He follows me everywhere in the house and has not had one accident in my place. Saturday, we went to visit a friend who owns Barks by the Bay down on South Dale Mabry. We got him a cool matching collar and leash that have flip flops on it. I think Elliot would be a flip flop if he were a shoe – he’s so laid back. We then headed to the Gasparilla Arts Festival downtown Tampa on his new leash. He was fabulous. There was absolutely no pulling. In fact, he walked right beside me the whole time. He would say hello to other dogs and of course, people thought he was just the cutest thing. That’s the best thing about dogs – they always bring a smile to people. If I stepped in to take a look at something, he would so politely just lay down until I was through. Sunday, I took him back over to see Marley and play while I played golf. He is getting along quite nicely with him. They play and lay next to each other just fine. Once I picked him up, we headed to Yappy hour at Macdintons. He is such a great dog in public and wins the smiles and hearts of many. While I socialized with friends, he was content just lying there and occasionally saying hi to a fellow dog or dogmate. He likes to sit on the patio and watch the ducks and birds. I just love Elliot. He is so loving. This is the first time I have rescued a dog. It is a wonderful feeling. I have let anyone know who asked me about him where I got him. I hope all of your animals are able to find an owner that will love the dogs as much as they need to be."

Sasha was adopted about a year ago but we wanted to share this updated picture of she and her sister Hildy. They are obviously doing well and are happy.

Another fantastic story. Little Gizmo is doing well, pictured here with sister Foxy. "Gizmo's stuck on Foxy, 'cause Foxy's stuck on him."

Two more adoptions to share...
Henry is doing well. His mom tells us, "We had a really great night together here at Casa de O'Henry. When I opened the door to the bedroom and he saw the bed, it was like in the Wizard of Oz when everything turns to color. He looked as if he'd just caught a glimpse of doggie nirvana. He was on that thing and laying in MY SPOT before I ever got there. We struggled a bit over where he was going to finally land but, before that, he did something really adorable. I propped up pillows behind me and was setting out to watch some tv when he stood up and looked at me really lovingly, then sprawled out on my lap! This is no small dog, so you can imagine. But it was pretty adorable."

Finally, Tebow's mom writes, "We are now the proud parents of Malik. We have had him for 48 hours and he is perfect. Thanks for the new addition to our family! P.S. We have renamed him Tebow since our daughter goes to the University of Florida and he already comes to it."

 With Memories of Love

We lost two of our little angels recently.

Bertie and DonOur wonderful little Bertie went to be with the angels at the rainbow bridge. Kelly was so grateful she was taken from the kill shelter and found such a loving famly. Not one day has gone by that she did not have Bertie in her heart. "We can't change their past and we can't control their future, but we can give them the here and now and for them that is enough." Her mom shared this with us, " I have sad news, and my heart is broken. I know your heart will hurt too. Bertie is gone, she died at 5:30 on Friday. Little Bertie had thirteen seizures in one day, she had many tests and I was at the veterinarian's with her from 8:30 until 5:30. They let me sit with her in the surgery room while she was on oxygen. She was also in heart failure. The x-rays of her heart and lungs revealed her heart enlarged to a great degree, her trachea was being compressed, there was little room in her lungs for oxygen and the fluids were starting to be pushed into her abdomen from the subsequent compression on her liver. The heart worms killed her. Our vet thinks she may have had them for five or six years, and due to her age and the enlargement of her heart she never had a chance. I want you to know our vet did everything in his power the last four months to give her the best quality of life, and the ultimate hope being she would live years. We also did every thing we could and spared no expense to care for her. We gave her everything she needed medically, and loved her with our whole hearts. I wish you could have seen her again. Her fur was fluffy, and she was happy here. She had a little bed that was up again the slider in our bedroom, she could look out into the back yard. She Loved that spot, and would lay in bed and look out the window at the water and the ducks for long periods of time. Then get up and join us again. She meet us at the door when we went out and when we picked her up she no longer held her legs stiff, she was totally relaxed and cuddly. In the evenings she always sat with Don in her big chair while he watched TV. She received a lot of attention from both of us daily. I am grieving and so is Don. However, our vet said something to me that has helped. He said that he saw her two to three times a month since the beginning of July and she was happier every time she came in; she knew she was loved. I asked them to have her cremated and we will be getting her ashes back. She will be buried with us someday. Thank you for bringing her into our lives. We will miss her forever. Nancy and Don

Sweet SamPatty also recently lost her little boy, Sam. When Sam came to us on the sidewalk Kelly was supposed to take him home only he would not let her touch him. She was at a complete loss as to what to do, but Sam seemed to have other plans. He wanted Patty to take him home. Kelly said she felt lucky that day that she did not have to deal with him herself, but now she knows it was not her that was lucky. Patty got lucky that day. She was paw picked by Sam. Patty told us, "Sam went into surgery tonight (12/7) for the second time to hopefully repair whatever was wrong with his intestinal track and making him vomit all the time. But Sam's heart was too weak and he didn't make it. Dr Hay called me at 6:30pm and started by telling me 'Patty, it's not good his heart arrested 15 minutes into the surgery and.... he died'.. Those words cut through me like a knife. My logical head tells me Thank God he didn't suffer and went in his sleep, but my heart is broken and all I know is I'll never see him again. I want to thank Kelly for sitting with me for my last visit with Sam and for all those who sent their thoughts, prayers and angels for Sam's recovery. I guess it just wasn't meant to be. I'll never forget that Saturday morning in March 2004 when Alison brought Sam and Sunny to Petco because the friend of his owner had dropped them off to be put down. Instead Alison got the call and off to Petco they came. Sam was ticked off at the world and would not let anyone close to him, so while the girls discussed what to do I made friends with him, and low and behold he let me pick him up. At that point Kelly said 'then you have to foster him'.. And he's been my little buddy ever since."

The rainbow bridge has two more of our little angels.

The Rescuer's Rainbow Bridge continues to remind us of why we do what we do everyday to bring loving homes to as many angels as we can.

Our thanks to everyone who came out to see us at the Museum for Mutts Fandango on Sunday March 30. We had a great time visiting with old friends and meeting new ones. We look forward to participating again next year.

Susan Banghart has started a new blog. Florida Rescued Dogs is a venue for caretakers of dogs rescued from a life of homelessness or worse. A place to share problems and solutions, stories and photos, references to books, services, events and links that may be helpful in the rehabilitation of dogs who have had a less than perfect life. It is also a place for the kind hearted folks who take in strays to vent, because life with rescued dogs can be challenging, as well as rewarding. Susan adopted one of our angels a couple of years ago, and was kind enough to feature LAAR in one of her articles. Go out and visit her site - you'll be glad you did.

If I Didn't Have Dogs...
I could walk around the yard barefoot in safety.
My house could be carpeted instead of tiled and laminated.
All flat surfaces, clothing, furniture, and cars would be free of hair.
When the doorbell rings, it wouldn't sound like a kennel and I could get to the door without wading through fuzzy bodies who beat me there.
I could sit on the couch and my bed the way I wanted, without taking into consideration how much space several fur bodies would need to get comfortable.
I would have money ..and no guilt to go on a real vacation.
I would not be on a first-name basis with
six veterinarians, as I put their yet unborn grandkids through college.
The most used words in my vocabulary would not be: out, sit, down, come, no, stay, and leave him/her/it ALONE.
My house would not be cordoned off into zones with baby gates or barriers.
My house would not look like a day care center, toys everywhere.
My pockets would not contain things like poop bags, treats and an extra leash.
I would no longer have to Spell the words B-A-L-L, F-R-I-S-B-E- E, W-A-L-K, T-R-E-A-T, B-I-K-E, G-O, R-I-D-E.
I would not have as many leaves INSIDE my house as outside.
I would not look strangely at people who think having ONE dog/cat ties them down too much.
I'd look forward to spring and the rainy season instead of dreading "mud" season.
I would not have to answer the question "Why do you have so many animals?" from people who will never have the joy in their lives of knowing they are loved unconditionally by someone as close to an angel as they will ever get.
How EMPTY my life would be!

One final thought from our angels...

The Meaning of Rescue

Now that I'm home, bathed and fed, all nicely tucked in my warm new bed
I'll open my baggage, lest I forget, so much to carry, so much to regret
Yes, there it is right on the top - Loneliness, Sadness, Heartache and Loss
And there by my leash hides Fear and Shame
And I still have to unpack the worst one - Pain
I loved them the others, the ones who left me, I wasn't good enough for they never kept me,
Will you add to my baggage, will you help me unpack
Or just look at my things and take me right back
Do you have time to help me unpack, put away my baggage and never look back
I pray that you do, I'm tired you see - but I do come with baggage
Will you still want me?

How You Can Help

Adoption of these wonderful dogs is our hope and top priority. However, if you can’t adopt here are other ways to help.
  • Foster care: Fostering provides a needy dog with a great home while we search for a forever family. It’s a big responsibility but the rewards are truly worth it.
  • Sponsorship: We have dogs that need extensive medical help. All sponsorship dollars go directly to the care of animal.
  • Volunteer: If you have some spare time, we sure could use your help.
  • Donations: All donations are greatly appreciated whether it is toys, blankets, pet crates, or money.
