Training Done Right

Do you make your dog work for food? Or does he have it easy - 2 squares a day with a few extra treats on the side?

As our friend, Jeff Drier with Bark Busters, tells us, "There are benefits to having a dog 'earn' his meal." Jeff has been kind enough to allow us to share his most recent newsletter Will Work for Food in this edition.

"Bark Busters is the world's largest, most trusted Home Dog Training company. Their mission is to promote clear and open communication between owners and their dogs using simple and effective training methods that appeal to the canine psyche." For more information, contact Jeff at 877-500-BARK (2275) or email tampa@barkbusters.com.

Look Who's Found a Home
Thank you for letting us know how much all of the little angels are loved.

Tigger has a wonderful family.  His mom writes, "I thought I'd tell you about the dog we adopted from you a year and a half ago. I didn't really want a dog; my husband did. In December 2006 we were near Petco and Jeremy said, "Let's go look at the dogs." I just knew ... Sure enough, in a pen full of yipping, wiggling puppies, was a very proper little pup who just sat there calmly, as if he were waiting for us. He was a Shepherd Mix, with floppy ears, big brown eyes and worried-looking blond eyebrows. We were told that his mom was a stray. Animal Services was going to euthanize mother and puppies--no room at the pound. But Lost Angels had taken all of them and fostered them, and they all got adopted that day, the day we found Tigger. He's at my feet as I type this, gazing sleepily out the window. He's learned to contain his enthusiasm and not jump up on people, he sits and lies down when told to, and he's stopped chewing shoes. He's happy to be with us, whether we're working in the yard or watching TV, and when we leave the house he sees us off at the front window, and then jumps onto the couch for a nap. Soon, when the dishwasher's done, we'll go together to get some dog and cat food. Tigger will prowl the aisles, looking for loose bits of spilled kibble. It's one of his favorite games. He loves going for walks in the park, loves chasing his tennis ball. At night he cuddles us for a while on the bed, then climbs onto his dog bed with his own blanket and pillow, mumbling as he gets comfortable. On cold nights, he likes for us to pull the blanket up and tuck him in. I can't believe I didn't want a dog--how in the world did I get through life without somebody like Tigger!"

Dante
has a great home with our friend Craig Muniz from WestFetch Delivery & Concierge Service.  Craig told us, "we adopted our dog, Dante, from Lost Angels back in 2005. What a great pup he is!! He's just a tad bigger now than he was when we got him, at 72 lbs, but we love every ounce of him!"

Odie
has found a happy home and is now heartworm free!  Her mom let us know, "My fiancé and I adopted Odie from you in February 2006. I know that my little man was bounced around from home to home until we came to take him. He has grown into a very calm, sweet, smart dog and could never imagine our life without him. I made a promise to you when we first took Odie to let you know when he became heartworm free. I am so excited to tell you that at our vet visit last week, all of his tests came back negative! The Heartguard Plus was far less invasive as the surgery and while not immediate, the results came quicker than we expected."

Robbie
is doing VERY WELL according to his mom.  "I thought you would enjoy an update on one of your most thankful children. Robbie continues to thrive and be my special couch potato. Brandy tries to play with him, but he isn't interested in her antics. They do, however, get along very well and occasionally share the same snuggle bed. Robbie enjoys chasing the birds in the yard and urinating on anything upright, especially if it's a new addition. However, he is now trained to use the yard instead of the house (most of the time). As you know, he is such a special little guy and is a blessing to both Brandy and I. He has a special car seat so he can perch above and see the sights when we go out. He fought the clip to keep him confined for the first trip, but he adjusted very well and now sits like a little king in his perch. I sing your praises so often. "

We recently heard from Adrian's mom," Adrian didn't want to be disturbed, I tried to get him to look at the camera, but he is napping with Lillie Bud on the couch and has no interest momentarily! He is fine. He is so happy and loved, and he seems to love us too. He follows me around most of the time and likes to sit on my lap while I'm on the computer. He is a real good boy; a joy in our lives.... Adrian is fine, and is a wonderful guy. I'm sure when he wakes up he will feel bad that he didn't send you a good photo!"

Maggie's
mom tells us, "Just a few words to let you know that lady has settled in and she is a happy and very spoiled dog. She has become very close to us both and a very happy wee dog she is - great around the apartment and a joy to come home to for us both. She is a daddy girl though. Just some pics to let you see her such a loving wee dog dedicated to us both. She has a crazy half hour and runs around with her toys and enjoys herself - so funny to see her do this. She has not chewed anything and only one mishap in the apartment. We changed her name to Maggie. She just looked like one. Thanks so much."

Willow is happy in her new home. Her mom writes, "She's such an awesome dog, we can't imagine life without her! We went to the mountains for our honeymoon and took Willow with us. She absolutely loved it! This pic is at home in her sweater my Mother-In-Law bought for her. It was a bit snug so she only kept it on long enough to take a silly picture!"

Heidi is doing well. Her mom writes, "She joined us December 26th, 2007 (what a great gift) and has been a wonderful joy to my whole family!! She is a delight and I thank God everyday that I found your web site."

With all the foreclosures happening today, many many pets are losing their families and being turned in to shelters. Many shelters are now over-capacity and experiencing difficulty just keeping them all fed. One little girl wants to change that and has created the freekibble.com site. Modeled after the free rice site that provides 20 grains of rice to feed the hungry for each correct word definition, free kibble contributes 20 pieces of kibble to shelters for each daily trivia question answered. 1,839,310 pieces of kibble have been donated since April 1, 2008. Test your knowledge and feed the animals at the same time. Be sure to bookmark this site and visit daily.

One of the sponsors of freekibble.com is Zootoo.com. Founded by Richard Thompson, former CEO of Meow Mix cat food, Zootoo.com is a pet community website bringing pet lovers together, to share information, connect with other pet lovers and help animals. Zootoo is launching the "Zootoo to the Rescue" Sweepstakes. We will provide funding for 15 animal rescue groups to help in the caring for these animals. The grand prize winner will receive a cash prize of $10,000, the first runner-up will receive a cash prize of $3,000, and the 13 second runners-up will receive a cash prize of $1,000 each. Our angels sure could use the money so please visit Zootoo between now and September 30 as often as you can. The more entries for LAAR, the more chances we have to win for our angels.

Are you interested in learning Pet CPR? On Saturday July 26 from 2-5 PM the SPCA is presenting a Pet CPR Certification Class. For a cost of $45, Dr. Michael Rumore, CVM Lake Seminole Animal Hospital will certify you in how to perform CPR and give you a basic understanding of first aid. This knowledge may just help save your pet's life someday. If you can't make the July event, the course will be offered again in September so don't miss out.

Have you considered
what will happen to your beloved pets if you become the victim or an accident or worse? George was recently involved in a car accident, leaving his dog, Shadow, behind. If you were unable to tell anyone you had pets at home alone how would they know? Please consider this "My Pets" wallet card as our gift to you and your angels. Fill it out and place in your wallet, or laminate and hang on your key ring. Either way it will alert authorities, family and friends about your pets when you cannot. Be sure to also make arrangements for your pets as you complete your estate planning. Florida law considers a pet tangible personal property, so if no arrangements have been made your pet(s) will be distributed the same as articles in your home or placed in a shelter. Plans for your pet(s) should be in writing and included with your other estate planning papers (wills, powers of attorney, etc.) to make sure your wishes are known and followed.

Our friends Denita and JD have opened A Chance at Life Animal Rescue Thrift Store. 100% of all proceeds go to help all local and statewide rescue groups provide care many of the animals desparately need. Denita was kind enough to feature LAAR on her blog and included accolades for our own Kelly, a hero to everyone who meets her both dog and human alike. Be sure to visit Denita's store at 738 Shamrock Blvd., Venice FL 34293, Phone #941-244-0009.

What are the most common mistakes that pet owners make? One of the ways to ensure your animal companion enjoys a long, happy life is to avoid the pitfalls of the most common pet-parenting mistakes.

Paw Wash Plus has come up with a special rescue adoption letter that will give away free services to anyone who rescues a dog from LAAR. For more information, visit their website or call 813-716-6645.
